{"id":1143,"date":"2009-12-14T10:57:32","date_gmt":"2009-12-14T15:57:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.dankohn.info\/?p=1143"},"modified":"2020-08-17T17:57:52","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T17:57:52","slug":"auburn-hosts-best-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.dankohn.info\/index.php\/2009\/12\/14\/auburn-hosts-best-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Auburn hosts BEST competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>from: <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.oanow.com\/oan\/news\/local\/article\/auburn_hosts_best_competition\/115493\/\">http:\/\/www2.oanow.com\/oan\/news\/local\/article\/auburn_hosts_best_competition\/115493\/<\/a><br \/>\nBrittany Whitley<br \/>\nStaff Writer<br \/>\nPublished: December 12, 2009<\/p>\n<p>Although it\u2019s typical to hear the cheers of sports fans vibrating out of the Auburn University\u2019s Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum on weekends, this Saturday was a little different.<\/p>\n<p>There was cheering on Saturday, but for the South\u2019s BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) Robotics Championship, which brought together about 55 high school and middle school teams from all over the Southeast, including Lee-Scott Academy and Auburn High School , in a competition that matched robot against robot.<\/p>\n<p>The event is a nationwide competition designed to excite students about engineering, science and technology. The ultimate goal is to inspire them to pursue careers in the engineering, science or technology fields,  said Mary Lou Ewald, director of outreach for the AU College of Science and Mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>Teams of students design and build robots, which compete against each other on an obstacle course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis competition is important because it places value on those students in science, math and engineering \u2026 This is their chance to shine,\u201d Ewald said.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s competition theme was \u201cHigh Octane\u201d and focused on chemical engineering and biofuels.<\/p>\n<p>Alabama Gov. Bob Riley stopped by the event, giving encouragement to the students competing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you work on a farm or for a manufacturer or in the medical field, today we are consumed by the productivity and efficiency of robot technology,\u201d Riley said. \u201cYou really are the best of the BEST.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014-<\/p>\n<p>The following are the final results for the BEST Robotics competition:<\/p>\n<p>BEST Award Winners<br \/>\n1st Place: Wetumpka High School \u2014 War Eagle<br \/>\n2nd Place: W.
