Bill Lee is prioritizing&nbsp;STEM \neducation in his legislative agenda, which proposes to boost \nopportunities for students statewide, including the creation of \nstatewide K-8 computer science standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;Wednesday&nbsp;announcement\n is Lee&#8217;s second education initiative tied to his legislative priorities\n and would create the Future Workforce Initiative focused on science, \ntechnology, engineering and mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee\u00a0is proposing $4 million\u00a0to\u00a0create\u00a0the initiative. The proposal must be approved by the Tennessee General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur agenda advocates for increased access to career \nand technical education for K-12 students and a key part of this \nincludes prioritizing STEM training,\u201d Lee said in the news release about\n the announcement. &#8220;The Future Workforce Initiative is a direct response\n to the emerging technology industry and making sure our students are \nfirst in line to be qualified for technology jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee&#8217;s\n proposal aims to place Tennessee in the&nbsp;top 25 states for job creation \nin the science, technology,&nbsp;engineering and math sector by 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee&#8217;s proposal will focus on three areas. They are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Launching\n 100 new middle school programs in STEM fields. Lee wants to triple the \nnumber of STEM-designated public schools by 2022.<\/li><li>Growing the \nnumber of teachers qualified to teach work-based learning and advanced \ncomputer science courses through training and the creation of K-8 \ncomputer science standards.<\/li><li>Expanding postsecondary STEM \nopportunities in high school through increased access to dual credit, AP\n courses and dual enrollment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee said in the\n release that 58 percent of all STEM jobs created in the country are&nbsp;in \ncomputer science fields, but&nbsp;only 8 percent of graduates study computer \nscience in college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;By exposing Tennessee students\n to computer science in their K-12 careers we are ensuring our kids have\n every chance to land a high-quality job,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jason Gonzales, Nashville Tennessean Published 5:22 p.m. CT Feb. 13, 2019 Gov.
