ASEE Robotics Competition

Louisville KY to host robotics event for 2 Year College Students and Freshmen/Sophomore University Students.

Details:

You are invited to participate in a great robotics competition for freshmen and sophomore engineering and engineering technology students!
The 12th Annual ASEE Model Design Competition will be held on June 21 in conjunction with the 2010 ASEE Annual Convention, Louisville, KY, June 20 – June 23, 2010. This competition is open to 1st and 2nd year students at four and two year colleges and universities. Note that participating students and advisors will receive passes so that they can attend this event without registering for the convention. In last year’s competition, 15 teams competed before an excited crowd in the convention’s Exhibition Hall. It was great fun!

In this year’s competition student teams will design and build a robot (Baseball Bot) that will perform on a track modeled after a baseball field.
The robot must fire one ping-pong ball through each of three outfield targets and then race around the bases as quickly as possible. The robots must also adhere to other rules and an oral presentation and written report are included as part of the competition.

The main reason for this competition is for students to gain a better understanding of the design process from start to finish. Designing and building something from an idea is probably why they chose engineering in the first place. Use this design competition as a platform to reinforce their ideas and have some engineering fun! We hope to see you and your students’ entries in Louisville.

For official rules and photos from prior competitions, visit the following web site:

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
I hope to see you in Louisville!

Solarbotics L298 Compact Motor Driver

Although I like the Solarbotics L298 Compact Motor Driver (H-Bridge) the pdf that comes with it does NOT include the schematic.

But it is available HERE but here it is for convenience:

solarbotics-l298_schematic_complete

but it did not include the L298 pinout description so I include it here:

pinout_small

The full data sheet for the L298 h-bride IC can be found HERE

Build a simple robot base (Update)

An update from my earlier post:

My students have gotten the first of the simple robot bases up and moving. A Wytech Fox11 board and a Solarbotics L298 Compact Motor Driver (H-Bridge) have been added to the bot base, along with the batteries and power distribution (fuse, switches, etc).

US First Mentor Meeting

Last year, MCS started several US First Robotics teams within the schools. This year the program is expanding to include more students and sponsors. Along with returning sponsor Medtronic, Smith & Nephew have agreed to sponsor the program here in Memphis.

If you are in high school in the MCS system, ask your principle if your school is participating. If they are not, they should be!

Just stumbled upon some great info about using the Wii remote and balance board with Linux and just had to save it! There has to be so neat projects you can do with that kind of technology available.
