World Space Week Event and Tribute to Apollo Flight Controllers

The University of Memphis Department of Physics and Materials Science will host an early World Space Week event on Friday, Sept. 26, in the Maxine A. Smith University Center Theater and Atrium. The evening will honor Apollo Flight Controllers and pay tribute to Bill Weppner, a longtime Memphis resident, retired Southwest Community College professor and former Apollo Flight Controller, who turns 90 in October. The event begins with a 5 p.m. reception in the UC Atrium, featuring a birthday cake for Weppner, followed by the program from 6-8 p.m. in the UC Theater. A group of Apollo Flight Controllers will share memories while viewing clips from “Mission Control: The Unsung Heroes of Apollo.” The event is free and open to the public.
